gotta have it - elvis auction in new york city

Gotta Have It of New York City has announced it's Rock N Roll Pop Art Auction on July 27th through August 5th. Here are some previews of the auction. Sound Engineer Bill Porter has some Elvis items in this auction as well.

. Elvis Presley wore this two piece green and tan suit with intricate Indian beading while on tour in the mid-1970's. The costume was designed by Bill Belew specifically for Elvis and has the I.C. Costume Co. label on both the inside collar of the jacket and the inside waistband of the pants. Also attached is Elvis' last dry cleaning tag for the suit, marked with an "E" and a number. Elvis wore this suit while he was on tour, going to various venues. Elvis gave the suit to his personal friend Michael McCowan at the Las Vegas International Hilton when visiting him there. Elvis let McCowan pick out a suit he wanted from his vast collection hanging in his dressing room, and McCowan picked this one for its gorgeous Indian beading. The beading is solely on the jacket and can be found in the front and the back, in a "belt" style" as well as the cuffs. The beading is virtually completely intact save for a few beads missing here and there. Some of these beads have been saved and are included with the suit. Also accompanying the suit is a signed letter from Michael McCowan attesting to Elvis having given him the suit as well as a signed copy of "Remember Elvis" by Joe Esposito (Elvis' road manager) who was friendly with McCowan at that time. The suit is in excellent condition with all the buttons, zippers and stitching intact. Estimate: $12,000 - $15,000.

. This is Elvis' personally owned and worn black star sapphire and diamond 14kt gold nugget ring that he wore in the 1970's. Black star sapphires were one of Elvis' favorite types of stones and he had various rings designed for him over the years (some say that Elvis like the black star sapphire stone even more than diamonds). This magnificent ring is no exception in its beauty. Accompanied by two color photographs of Elvis wearing the ring in 1975 and a letter of provenance from Tom Hulett (Elvis' concert promoter along with Jerry Weintraub, who both owned the company at the time that promoted Elvis' concerts outside of Las Vegas-Concerts West). Estimate: $5,000 - $7,000.

The Bill Porter Section:

. This Elvis Presley personally owned and worn ring, comprised of an American Eagle Indian Head 5 dollar coin surrounded by diamonds set in 14KT gold comes directly from the personal collection of his sound engineer and long time friend, the legendary Bill Porter. Porter is renowned for engineering nearly all of Elvis’ post 1960 hits until his death in 1977. Recording with Elvis in the celebrated “Studio B” in Nashville, Porter helped to craft some of Elvis’ greatest hits including, “Are You Lonesome Tonight” and “It’s Now or Never". Porter’s album recordings with Elvis include “Elvis Is Back”, “His Hand In Mine,” “Pot Luck”, and “Something for Everybody”. Bill went on the road with Elvis from 1969 to 1977 and recorded many of Elvis’ “Live In Las Vegas” shows. Comes with a letter from Bill Porter's family. Excellent condition. Estimate: $5,000 - $7,000.

. These blueprints for the sound system at Graceland and George Nichopoulos' home ("Dr. Nick") come directly from the personal collection of Elvis Presley’s sound engineer and long time friend, the legendary Bill Porter. This blueprint archive consists of the original 36' X 24" blueprints from architect Bill Nixon, dated August 15, 1975, titled "ADDITION TO RESIDENCE, At Graceland..." A detailed, handwritten note from Nixon to Porter reviews the "layout and location of the conduit & pull wire for your sound installation." A second set of 36" x 24" blueprints dated October 23, 1975 titled "Sound System Conduit Layout" gives further details. In addition there are two smaller 18" x 12" blueprint "subsets" for the "ELEVATION OF RIGHT SIDE OF SPEAKERS". Accompanying these Graceland blueprints is a 5" x 8" yellow lined notepad filled with notes taken by Porter regarding the installation. Also included in this archive are the original 36" x 24" sound system blueprints that were drawn up for the Memphis home of Dr. George Nichopoulos (Elvis's personal physician Dr. Nick), which Porter also installed.
