ende der 60er/anfang der 70er war soul einer der haupteinflüsse auf die musik von elvis.
"in the ghetto" (*), "suspicious minds", "kentucky rain", "true love travels on a gravel road" (**), "long black limousine" und einige andere songs der 69er session fallen in die kategorie "country soul", eine stilistische eigenart der südstaaten, wo es zwischen schwarzer und weißer musik eine starke wechselwirkung gab.
"loving arms" (***) detto. oder "just pretend".
"any day now" und "only the strong survive" sind sowieso soul-klassiker.
"patch it up" ist ein purer soul-knaller, der auch von otis redding hätte kommen können.
"we can make the morning" und andere balladen dieser zeit sind sehr soulig.
dazu kommen viele songs, die auffällig funky sind: "clean up your own back yard", "a little less conversation", "change of habit", "rubberneckin'", "if you talk in your sleep"...
"walk a while in my shoes"
etc. etc.
