Ironically, I was at the Hilton Hotel in Las Vegas when I received the
very sad news about Charlie. Elvis considered him a close and trusted
friend and coworker, and Elvis would be among the mourners today if he
were still alive.

The only bright spot for me personally is that I had the chance to speak
with Charlie two days before we lost him. He called me on Wednesday,
and we had a warm and wonderful conversation. He was in his typical
good humor, although I could hear in his voice that all was not well
with him. He knew that fans around the world cared about him and were
praying for his recovery. I feel blessed that I had this opportunity to
talk to Charlie so close to the end, and to tell him that I loved him.
