Myrna Smith war von Anfang an ein Mitglied der Gruppe. Sie war auch Live bei " Elvis The Concert " zu erleben.

Als Elvis 1969 erstmals die " Sweet Inspirations "als Background-Chor von Aretha Franklin hörte, war er hellauf begeistert und engagierte die stimmgewaltigen Künstlerinnen sowohl für seine Konzerte als auch für Plattenaufnahmen. Bei Elvis offizieller Rückkehr auf die Bühne - 31. Juli 1969 in Las Vegas - waren die Sweets erstmals in seinem Vorprogramm zu sehen.

Der Gesang der Sweet Inspirations bereicherte Aufnahmen von Aretha Franklin und anderen Legenden. Sie hatten mit eigenen R&B, Gospel und Pop Aufnahmen Erfolg, insbesondere mit ihrer ersten Hit Single "Sweet Inspiration" , die der Gruppe den Namen gab und ihnen in den späten 1960er Jahren eine Grammy Nominierung einbrachte. Es war dieser Song, der Elvis auf sie aufmerksam machte. Elvis nahm sie ohne eine extra Vorsingen als Background-Gruppe und Vorband unter Vertrag, als er 1969 in Las Vegas auf die Bühne zurückkehrte. Die Sweet Inspirations trafen Elvis, als sie zu den Proben für die Auftritte 1969 eintrafen. Die „Sweets“ arbeiteten mit Elvis in Vegas und bei seinen Tourneen von 1969 bis 1977.
Die Originalgruppe bestand aus Myrna Smith, Sylvia Shemwell, Estelle Brown und Cissy Houston ( Mutter von Whitney Houston). Houston verließ die Gruppe nach ihrem ersten Auftritt mit Elvis um Solo weiterzumachen. Smith, Shemwell und Brown blieben während der Elvis Jahre zusammen aber schließlich trennten sich ihre beruflichen Wege. In den 90er Jahren kam die Gruppe wieder zusammen und Mitte der 90er Jahre kam Portia Griffin als neues Mitglied dazu.

JOE KREIN: CAN YOU TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF. WHERE WERE YOU BORN AND RAISED?

MYRNA SMITH : I WAS BORN AND RAISED IN SOUTH NEW JERSEY. I'M NOT TO FAR FROM YOU. A LOT OF MY FAMILY STILL LIVES THERE. I MOVED TO CALIFORNIA IN 1973. I BOUGHT A HOME. THAT'S BECAUSE JERRY SHILLING LIVED HERE. WE WERE DATING AT THE TIME. I LATER MARRIED HIM. MY MOTHER AND MY SON LIVED WITH ME. I MOVED OUT HERE AND ELVIS HAD JUST GIVEN ME A CADILLAC. I FLEW TO MEMPHIS WITH JERRY TO PICK UP THE CAR. ELVIS HAD ALSO GIVEN HIM A CAR. SO WE ALL DROVE HERE FROM MEMPHIS TO CALIFORNIA. I WASN'T SO USED TO SUCH A BIG CAR. (LAUGHING)

WHEN DID YOU START IN THE MUSIC BUSINESS?

I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN IN THE MUSIC BUSINESS. SINCE I WAS FIVE YEARS OLD. MY FATHER HAD A RADIO SHOW IN NEW JERSEY. IT WAS A GOSPEL SHOW. I SING ON THAT SHOW. THAT WAS SO MUCH FUN!

DID YOU LATER BECOME INVOLVED IN GROUPS? I MEAN DID YOU START RIGHT OFF WITH THE "SWEETS?

YES I DID. I ALSO TAUGHT HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH FOR THREE YEARS. BUT I WAS SINGING WHILE I WAS TEACHING. I WAS WORKING IN SESSIONS. THE FIRST ONE I DID WAS WITH DION WARRICK, AND BURK BACCURACK. HE CALLED ME , HE SAID YOU HAVE TO DO THIS SESSION! BECAUSE HE HAD CALLED ME PREVIOUSLY TO DO ONE. BUT I DIDN'T DO IT. I WAS AFRAID. BUT FINALLY CONVINCED ME. SO I DID BACK UP FOR ALL HER RECORDINGS. YOU SEE DION AND I WENT TO THE SAME CHURCH. SO DID SISSY HOUSTON. WHITNEY'S MOM. HER MOM WAS OUR CHOIR DIRECTOR.

GOODNESS WHAT TALENT IN ONE CHOIR!

SO I DID SESSIONS UNTIL I JOINED THE SWEET INSPIRATIONS. WEXLER SAID TO US THAT WE SHOULD START A GIRL GROUP OF OUR OWN. SO I HAD TO QUIT TEACHING SCHOOL. SO I COULD DO THIS SINGING THING! WE WERE TRAVELING SO MUCH. I FOUND THAT I COULD NOT DO BOTH.

BUT SINGING HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE LOVE OF MY LIFE.

IT WAS FUNNY BECAUSE ONE DAY , MY MANAGER GOT A LETTER FROM A FAN. HE WANTED TO KNOW IF THE MYRNA SMITH IN THE SWEETS WAS HIS EX TEACHER. HE TOLD HIM I WAS. NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW THAT.

Es war Houstons Soprano während der Midnight Show am 26.8.1969 in Las Vegas als Elvis den Sprechteil von Are you lonesome tonight änderte und dann aus dem Lachen nicht mehr rauskam.Aus irgendeinem Grund war es ihr Gesang den er sooo lustig fand. "Sing it baby"... Kennt jeder .

wer es noch nicht kennt:
ich habe hier ein sehr interessantes interview entdeckt, wo sie in erster linie über elvis spricht.
sehr bemerkenswert fand ich, wie sie über elvis spricht. dass sie ihn überhaupt nicht dick, oder weniger gut ausehend empfand. klar, hatte man manchmal das gefühl, dass er mal "schlechter" aussah, aber gerade zur CBS-Show fand sie, dass er wieder recht gut aussieht, weil er da sogar bisschen abgenommen hatte. ( wenn ich mich recht entsinne :gruebel:).
als sie nach seinem tod zum ersten mal die aufnahmen sah, dachte sie, man hätte was daran gefaket, weil sie ihn dann tatsächlich dick wahrnahm, was ihr während der zusammenarbeit nie so auffiel.
sie war ja danach mit jerry schilling verheiratet und hat mit ihm sogar ein paar songs für die beach boys mitproduziert/geschrieben. wussste ich gar nicht.

Das schoß mir damals in Wels beim Konzert sofort durch den Kopf, als Jerry seitlich an der Wand stand und während er auf seinen "Auftritt" wartete, ständig dem Geschehen auf der Bühne zuschaute und im Takt mitwippte!

Ich musste dann immer abwechselnd von ihm zu Myrna rübersehen und wieder retour. Auch als er dann auf der Bühne war und seine Elvis-Stories erzählte, wechselte mein Blick irgendwie immer zwischen ihm und Myrna hin und her, ich weiß auch nicht warum ... :cool:

auf empfehlung einer/s mods habe ich das video hier rein getan, weil es keinen thread für die "sweets" gibt.
als ich das hier fand, dachte ich erst, ich täusch mich. :grins:
aber nein, es sind tatsächlich die "sweets" mit ricky nelson, wie sie "mystery train" singen. :grins:

Ich hoffe sehr,dass Myrna wieder gesund wird. Habe sie als sehr sympathischen Menschen in Berlin kennengelernt.

Das ist schon heftig. Für uns die (gehe ich mal von aus) alle Krankenversichert sind eine unvorstellbare Situation. Schön, dass ihre Kollegen und Fans zu ihr halten.

In USA kannst du dich aber auch privat krankenversichern. Deshalb verstehe ich es nicht so ganz, weshalb Myrna nun durch ihre Erkrankung in solche finanzielle Notsituation geraten ist. Auch wenn eine private KV in USA einige tausend Dollar pro Jahr kostet, sollte sie es sich wohl hätten leisten können.
Ich wünsche ihr jedenfalls alles Gute.

Myrna's kidney's shutting down led to her sudden failure of health. Her having a stroke on top of that only made her recovery even more difficut. That and the fact that she is 67 years old doesn't help. With the latest news that she has taken a turn for the worst usually means it's time for the family to come and say their goodbyes. This is how it works in the medical world of one who is on their death bed. I just hope Lisa and Priscilla take advantage of the precious time to say goodbye. If they haven't already. I also hope her and Martin, her son, are at peace after their differences several years ago. It could be any day now that we get the sad news that Myrna has left us to be with god....and Elvis.

Ich verfolge ihren Krankheitsverlauf schon seit Monaten und befürchte schon seit langem das Schlimmste!:traurig:
Habe Myrna heuer im Jänner mit Denis Jale und der TBC-Band im Metropol gesehen.

Ich muss die ganze Zeit daran denken. Das erste mal habe ich die Sweets 2005 live in Bad Nauheim gesehen. Ein Teil der TCB Band war dabei und für mich war es eine riesen Sache! Die Mädels waren so gut drauf und wirkten gesund und munter. Damals habe ich allen drei Damen ein silbernes Herz mit einem kleinen Schmetterling darin geschenkt, es sollte ihnen Glück bringen.
Leider ist es anders gekommen.:traurig:
Ich bin so froh, dass ich im Februar noch zum Konzert in Frankfurt war. Wenn eine geht, wird es niemals mehr dasselbe sein.:traurig:
