kurz vor dem flughafen toronto war eigentlich schon digi-cam verbot..

nach knappen 9 stunden flug dann also die ankunft in kanada.
einreisen, ausreisen und gleich wieder einreisen.. das alles und noch mehr (gepäck suchen, terminal wechseln, fingerabdrücke und foto hinterlassen) in etwas weniger als einer stunde..

so kamen wir ein wenig gehetzt zu unserem zweiten flugzeug auf dieser reise.. dieses hatte (wohl aufgrund seiner grösse und dem damit zusamenhängenden fassungsvermögen) keine klassen sondern nur mehr sitzreihen. unschönerweise konnten wir diesen zweiten flug nicht nebeneinander verbringen und so waren wir für die nächsten drei stunden luftlinienmässig getrennt.

und dann kam.. mömphis!
anstatt geheiligten boden zu küssen fiel mir als erstes auf, dass es dort deutlich wärmer war als bei uns. gleich danach fiel mir auf, dass sich in den amerikanischen flughäfen seit den katastrophen-filmen der 70er nicht geändert zu haben scheint: dieselben faden, kack-braunen teppiche, dieselben tapeten und, nicht zu vergessen, derselbe mief..

wir also ab in den shuttle-bus, der uns zur mietwagen-firma bringen sollte.
und spätestens hier fällt einem der grosse unterschied zu uns europäern auf.. die amis sind durch die bank freundlich und zuvorkommend! was meiner meinung nach NICHT ausschliesslich darauf zurückzuführen ist, dass die meisten der angestellten zu 70% von trinkgeld (tips) leben.

nun gut, auto geholt (ein jeep der marke jeep) und raus auf den highway..
ratet mal, wie oft wir uns auf dem weg zum hotel (dank meiner aktiven mithilfe) verfahren haben?
hab ich übrigens schon erwähnt, dass es unser gepäck vorgezogen hatte, den stress nicht mitzumachen? nein?
nun ja, es blieb vorerst verschollen..

nach zig umdrehungen - marv das auto, ich die karte - hatten wir unsere bleibe für die nächsten tage dann doch gefunden und auch rasch und unkompliziert in beschlag genommen. und dann war erst mal klimatisieren und chillen angesagt..
hach ja, den getränkeautomaten unten neben dem pool werd ich wohl nie ganz vergessen: vanilla coke, cherry coke und dr.pepper :wub:

soweit erst mal zum 5ten oktober

halbwegs ausgeschlafen machten wir uns ohne frühstück (hab ich schon mal erwähnt, dass die amis absolut anspruchs- und niveau-los sind, was die herstellung von kaffee angeht? nein? hiermit erledigt..), aber doch motiviert auf in richtung missisippi.

dank der erstklassigen wegbeschreibung von butch :knuddel: fanden wir dort auch ohne grobe fehler und regel-verletzungen hin :top:
aropos beschreibung: ohne den link von crawfish hätt ich das ganze wohl gar nicht erst gefunden :brav:
und dann war er plötzlich neben uns.. der grosse, lange fluss.. ol´ man river höchst persönlich.. der mississippi :pray:

ein parkhaus unweit der beale street war schnell gefunden, und dann ging es auch schon abwärts..
weils ja vorher leicht aufwärts gegangen war.

und dann gings los: wir hatten die tickets ja online fast einen monat vorher bestellt.. aber unter marv´s namen - fragt mich nicht,
wie oft sie den in díversen variationen buchstabiert und ausgesprochen hat - war nix zu finden. dann die rettende idee..
es war auf meinen bestellt worden.
wie VELINA auf memphisianisch klingt? nun ja.. das ist eine andere geschichte :roll:

wir hatte noch ein wenig zeit, bevor das *boarding* los ging und kramten uns neugierig durch den schiffs-shop. ich glaube,
da gab es nix was es nicht irgendwo gab.. von alten schatzkarten bis hin zu elvis-marmor-imi-büste und wieder retour.
einen softdrink und 2$ später ging es dann auch schon an bord.
tja, da sassen wir nun.. und senkten den alters-durchschnitt drastisch. denn ausser uns und 2 pärchen mit frischlingen war das publikum zwischen 60 und geschätzten 85.
ihren baseball-caps und namens-schildchen nach waren sie von einer versammlung ehemaliger soldaten eines marine-schiffs und hatten somit schon einiges erlebt. was allerdings der stimmung keinen abbruch tat.. im gegenteil.
so aufgeregt schnattern hört man es bei uns in einem altersheim wohl nur sehr selten.

und dann war ausparken angesagt.. zeit für ein paar inspektions-aufnahmen..

natürlich hatten wir während der rundfahrt, die übrigens knappe 90 minuten dauert und sich *nur* innerhalb von memphis bewegt - einen reiseführer. ich hätte ihn eher stand-up-comedian genannt aber einige seiner ausführungen und anekdoten waren doch sehr interessant (sofern es einem kärnter möglich war, einen in memphis geborenen schwarzen zu verstehen).

nach einem kleinen bummel durch die naheliegenden strassen - union streetm, kurz in die beale street geschnuppert - waren wir dann auch schon wieder unterwegs in bereits vertrautes revier..
soll heissen, wir fuhren zurück zum hotel.

dort gab´s endlich auch mal positives zu vermelden: unser gepäck hatte beschlossen, die reise mit uns gemeinsam fortzusetzen :hurra:

derart motiviert beschlossen wir, die souvenir-shops gegenüber von graceland zu durchforsten.. gesagt, getan :roll:
nach unzähligen tassen, karten, kerzen und shirts fanden wir schliesslich einen shop der zwar nichts interessantes zum mitnehmen bot, dafür umso mehr zum angucken und vor ehrfurcht erstarren..
etwa die hälfte des shops war mit vitrinen bestückt, deren inhalt eng und vor allem ausschliesslich mit dem 68 comeback special verbunden war :pray:

Nun hab ich Gänsehaut, das ist der Blick, den ich jeden Abend in mich aufnahm. Ich hab mich einfach an die warme Mauer gelehnt, die Arme obendrauf, das ist noch so real in Erinnerung, wie sehr sie die Hitze vom Tag gespeichert hatte, und schaute über das bunt beleuchtete Grundstück.....

Ich würde sagen, es sind ungefähr 22 :behindsofa:
das ist der Blick, den ich jeden Abend in mich aufnahm. Ich hab mich einfach an die warme Mauer gelehnt, die Arme obendrauf, das ist noch so real in Erinnerung, wie sehr sie die Hitze vom Tag gespeichert hatte..

nachdem ich die heutige nachtschicht grossteils damit verbracht hab, unscharfe fotos auszusieben und unlesbares halbwegs lesbar zu machen(alleine die fotos von graceland selber waren legion, jetzt sinds nur noch 570) werd ich in der kommenden nacht den thread ausbauen und mal gucken, was wir so alles aufgenommen haben :spy:

mal sehen, es gibt bäume, wiesen, pferde-koppeln, squirrels (:grins:) und jede menge kitsch :roll:
fotos vom grab werdet ihr von mir nicht zu sehen bekommen, und zwar aus zweierlei gründen;
zum einen gibt es (auch hier im forum) schon mehr als genug davon zu bestaunen, zum anderen war mir weder während der tour noch am morgen darauf danach, welche zu machen. und diejenigen von euch, die schon mal davor gestanden sind, werden vielleicht auch verstehen, warum.

aber hat Dir/Euch die Stadt selbst gefallen ??
in den Studios waren wir auch, ok nicht zu Hellween, aber ganz OK.
der walk ist nur in einem bestimmten abschnitt schön, das wars finde ich auch schon
dafür sind Malibu und Venice Beach sehr schön anzusehen. Wart ihr dort auch?

Stimmt, Downtown LA hat nichts wirklich reizvolles zu bieten und auch am Hollywood Bvd.
gibt es nur einen begrenzten eindrucksvollen Abschnitt.

Ich selbst war bereits das 4. mal in bzw. rund um LA. Diesmal hat es uns einen Tag nach Santa Monica verschlagen.
Kein Vergleich zu Downtown LA! Hier merkt man aber auch einen sehr starken europäischen Einfluß und das Meer tut sein eigenes dazu *schwärm*.

In LA ist natürlich die Gegend rund um Beverly Hills nicht zu verachten, wir sind da an einem traumhaften Kunstmarkt vorbei gekommen. Oder rund um den Farmers Market, wirklich wunderschön.

abgesehen davon gibts auch in Memphis gegenden, die alles andere als schön sind..

Wie lange hat's gedauert? Seit 1938 tüftelte er an einem Stift, der die Druckerschwärze über ein rollendes Kügelchen gleichmäßig auf dem Papier verteilt. Am 10. Juni 1943 war es dann soweit. Der erste Kugelschreiber wurde patentiert und damit das lästige Eintauchen des Füllfederhalters ins Tintenfass überflüssig. Die ersten Kugelschreiber für den privaten Verbrauch verkaufte das Kaufhaus Gimbel am 21. Oktober 1945 in New York. Mit 12,50 Dollar damals kein Schnäppchen. Vier Jahre später erreichte das praktische Schreibutensil den deutschen Markt - für zwanzig Mark das Stück. Erst als der französische Baron Marcel Bich 1950 Biro das Patent abkaufte, die Firma Bic gründete und in Millionenstückzahl produzierte, wurde der Schreiberling massentauglich

Immer wieder erstaunlich, dass selbst Urlaubsscheine aus der Armeezeit bei Presleys aufbewahrt wurden. Ich möchte zu gern mal im Archiv oder auf dem Dachboden in Graceland stöbern. Da müssen ja noch wahre Schätze zu finden sein.

der - wenn ich es richtig in erinnerung habe - vorletzte tag in memphis führte uns u.a. ins stax museum
(wo das fotografieren leider ausnahmslos verboten ist), in die beale street und natürlich auch ins legendäre SUN studio
(das zu fuss nicht grade nahe liegt, aber was nimmt man nicht alles auf sich..)

zum studio und zur tour selber sei kurz gesagt, dass hier (wie auch im stax) komplett auf jugendliches personal gesetzt wird.
sowohl die tour-guides als auch die shop-mitarbeiter sind zwischen 25 und 30.
ein punkt, den ich persönlich etwas schade finde.. vor allem weil es interessant gewesen wäre, mit jemandem zu plaudern,
der zu sam´s zeiten schon/noch dabei war.

was stark auffällt, ist der umstand, dass sich 75% der studio-story rund um ELVIS drehen.
das wird meiner meinung dem studio und seiner bedeutung in den 50ern und 60ern in keinster weise gerecht.
Lewis und Cash werden beinahe beiläufig erwähnt (in zusammenhang mit der mio.do.q. session), genauso wie B.B. King und viele andere
(von denen die meisten gar unerwähnt bleiben..)
man könnte meinen, SUN war VOR bzw BIS 1954 von schwarzen bluesern besetzt - dann kam El bis etwa 1956.. und danach war stille :noidea:

Nach dem doch - zumindest um diese Jahreszeit - eher ruhigen, wenn auch emotional sehr aufwühlenden Aufenthalt in Memphis ging es dann am 9.10 per Flugzeug via Phoenix nach Las Vegas.

Schon am Flughafen konnte der Unterschied zu Memphis merklicher nicht sein. Rundumbeschallung durch die unzähligen Slot-Machines schon in der Ankunftshalle. Nach den besinnlichen Momenten in Memphis konnte einem das schon rasch nerven ... zumal wir wieder "etwas länger" auf die Ankunft unseres Gepäcks warten durften. Aber es kam letztendlich doch an.

Dann nichts wie raus aus der Ankunftshalle und quasi direkt in die längste Strecht-Limo gestolpert, die ich jemals gesehen habe. Und ich sag Euch, es war gar nicht leicht den inneren Schweinehund zu bekämpfen, der meinte, dass wir jetzt zur Fahrt ins Hotel eine ebensolche mieten sollten. Mr.B. hinter mir her schleifend und seinen Protest ignorierend (:ups:) konnten wir uns dann doch von der Hummer-Strech-Limo trennen und nahmen den Bus zum Stratosphere Tower. Unsere Basisstation während des Las Vegas Aufenthalt.

Und am nächsten Morgen gings dann - nach einem ausgiebigen amerikanischen Frühstück *ürps* gleich mal Mitten ins Geschehen am
Las Vegas Strip.

Unser Hotel samt Stratosphere Tower hinter uns lassend, findet Ihr dir Route unseres ersten Tages ... in etwa in der Mitte vom Strip angelangt, haben wir dann definitiv die "Patschen" (Hausschuhe) gestreckt und w.o. gegeben.

Vor lauter "wow", "toll", "irre" sind wir nicht mal zum gamblen gekommen. Was wir auch tatsächlich erst am 4. Tag (!) getan haben ...
und nach den 5 verlorenen Dollar - natürlich standesgemäß am ELVIS-Spielautomaten - war dann gleich auch wieder Schluß.
