Steve Binder, der Produzent von NBC, überredete Elvis zu seinen Wurzeln zurückzukehren. Er forderte Elvis auf, mal auf die Straße zu gehen, um herauszufinden, ob junge Leute ihn noch erkannten. Elvis zögerte zunächst, entschloss sich aber dann doch zu diesem Schritt. Als ihn kaum jemand erkannte, stimmte er zu, dass seine Karriere dringend einen Anschub benötigte.
Schon im Juni des selben Jahres wurde gedreht, die Show wurde zu einem riesigen Erfolg, was nicht zuletzt der Tatsache zu verdanken war, dass Elvis sich mit Hilfe des Produzenten Steve Binder gegen die Vorstellung Colonel Parkers durchgesetzt hatte. Colonel Parker wollte nämlich eine Weihnachtsshow daraus machen und stellte sich dabei vor, das Elvis in Anzug und Krawatte ganz artig 20 Weihnachtslieder singen sollte. Aber so kam es dazu, dass der komplett in schwarzem Leder gekleidete Elvis, viele seiner alten Hits aus den 50er Jahren sang und dabei eine Dynamik an den Tag legte, die man von ihm kaum noch erwartet hatte. Später wurde diese Show als "Comeback Show" bezeichnet - der alte Elvis war wieder da!
