Elvis, still number one!

THE 1000TH NUMBER ONE SINGLE

The Official UK Singles Chart Celebrates Its 1000th Number One Song:

On Sunday 16th January 2005 a musical and cultural landmark was achieved. The Official UK Singles Chart witnessed the 1000th song to reach the Number One position since the Chart began.

The landmark was achieved by none other than The King - Elvis Presley - with his 1959 Number One double A-side "One Night / I Got Stung"

As part of a campaign to honour Elvis Presley's 70th birthday, SonyBMG re-released each of Presley's 18 Number One UK hits in chronological order over 18 consecutive weeks; each single was released in a slipcase bearing the same artwork found on the original release.

Darren Haynes from The Official UK Charts Company said,
"I think it's fantastic that we've arrived at this landmark. It's great for the music business, it's great for the media but more importantly, it's exciting for the artists, their fans and the chart obsessives."

"Elvis is one of the biggest artists of all time. Even before the reissues, he'd been on the charts for more weeks than any other artist"

How Did It Feel To Be Number One In The Official UK Singles Chart?

The Artists:
"When I found out I was number one in the UK charts with 'True' it was one of the happiest and most exhilarating days of my life! I really thought I had arrived".
Tony Hadley, January 2005

"My 'overnight success' took more than a decade, so I was over the moon when I got my first No. 1."
Shakin' Stevens, January 2005

The Songwriter:
"I had had a number one hit in America before but having a number one in your own territory is much more fun as everyone knows it is you. It was a very special day when I heard Every Loser Wins had got to the top of the charts." Simon May, January 2005

The Producer:
"My first No 1 was 'Mighty Quinn' in 1968 by Manfred Mann. I was not only gobsmacked that it made No 1, but that it made top 20! I hated the original Bob Dylan demo so much, that Manfred had to PERSUADE me to do it with them. How lucky can you get, it made No 1 in the USA too!

My next was 'Under The Moon Of Love', by Showaddywaddy. The crazy thing about this track was that it was chosen by a parrot belonging to the band's drummer Malcolm Allured. The Duke. Seriously, he played potential new songs to the bird and if it danced along that was it!!! It was number one for Christmas 1976. By the way, the parrot still lives, and you can still see the effect!!!"
Mike Hurst, January 2005
